A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is on trial at Hove Crown Court charged with the murder of Joshua Ingram, who was fatally stabbed at Seaford railway station, on September 10, 2025.
He has pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of manslaughter.
He is also accused, along with two youths aged 17 and 15, of conspiracy to cause GBH with intent.
The 15-year-old is also on trial charged with assisting an offender, which the 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to.
The friend, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court how Joshua Ingram was stabbed by another 16-year-old on the train station platform while travelling home.
The killer lunged at Joshua with a 19cm blade without saying a word, a court heard.
The friend who was travelling home from college with Joshua told a jury in Hove: “No words, no hesitation, he just did it.
“He tapped me on the shoulder, then he’s just lunged at Josh.
“He pulls the knife out in front of me, from his right hip, and lunges at Josh on the platform.”
The witness said all three boys knew each other from secondary school.
“It was only 20 quid.
“I’d have thought he would’ve said ‘Where’s my 20 quid, where’s my 20 quid’.
“He steps forward in front of me and lunges at Josh.
“When he stepped forward, I saw it and I screamed Josh and he turned round.
“If it wasn’t Josh, he would’ve just stabbed some random.
“He didn’t even check if it was Josh,” the friend said.
“By the time he turned around, he got stabbed.
“He took a couple of steps and fell down.
“I’ve told him to come to me.
“Josh was saying ‘Hold the wound, hold the wound’.
“Then he just dropped,” the friend said.
“He had no hesitation.
“He had a very still facial expression.
“He didn’t look like he had any anger in him.
“He looked very calm, normal, then he just did that,” the friend said.
“It was so close, he just went straight up to him and it went straight in.”
The friend said he heard Joshua’s last words.
“He said call my girlfriend,” the teenager said.
“I think he might have called him a b**** after stabbing him.
“I don’t know.
“I was frozen in shock.
“I don’t even think Josh knew what was happening,” the friend said.
Giving live evidence from behind screens at the Crown Court in Hove, the boy admitted he could not be sure if the defendant called Joshua Ingram a b**** after stabbing him.
He confirmed he told police he had said ‘Yeah’ when he was tapped on the shoulder by the defendant.
Colin Aylott KC for the defence asked him to confirm a transcript from police body worn cameras.
“The defendant came up behind and said ‘Is that Josh and I said Yeah’.
“Do you agree now that’s what you said?” Mr Aylott asked.
“Yeah,” the boy agreed.
The family of Joshua Ingram, who live in Newhaven, described him as a “cheeky chappy who was loved by many” and who was taken “far too soon”.
The 16-year-old denies murder and conspiracy to commit GBH with intent.
Two other boys aged 15 and 17 also deny conspiracy to commit GBH with intent.
One of the other boys denies assisting an offender.
The trial at Lewes Crown Court in Hove continues.
