Concerns have been raised following an “escalation” in anti-social behaviour at a block of flats in West Belfast.
Police were called to a number of incidents at the Choice Housing apartments on Stewartstown Road on Sunday, July 5, alongside a large number of young people gathering in the area.
Videos of the anti-social behaviour have been circulating on social media following the incidents with a number of them showing two women fighting while surrounded by a large group. The fight ends up spilling on to the Stewartstown Road.
Other videos show a group throwing eggs and other items at the windows of one of the apartments. A 30-year-old man was later arrested in connection with this and remains in police custody at this time.
Following the incidents last night, West Belfast Sinn Fein MLA Danny Baker said on social media: “There have been ongoing issues with the flats for some time; this evening, it has escalated.
“There are a lot of older teenagers getting involved, and I would ask parents to please touch base with their teens.
“Finding solutions to what is going on in Stewartstown Road is very complex.
“Young ones should stay away.”
Sergeant Shore said: “Shortly after 6.30pm, police attended the area following a number of reports of disorder. “Upon attendance, we noted a large crowd of young people in the area, and located a man who had had the windows of his property smashed with bricks and eggs. “The male occupant had also sustained a minor injury to his head during the incident. “One man aged in his 30s was subsequently arrested on suspicion of criminal damage, and remains in custody at this time, assisting with police enquires.” Sergeant Shore continued: “Our enquiries remain ongoing this morning, and we have been liaising with local community representatives in relation to issues around anti-social behaviour in the area.
“We would appeal to anyone who has any information which could assist us, to contact police using our witness appeal form at https://reporting.psni.police.uk/appealsquoting1335 of 05/07/26 or call us on 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at http://crimestoppers-uk.org/. ”
A spokesperson for Choice Housing said: “Choice prioritises tenant safety and wellbeing and is aware of reports of incidents over the weekend in the area.
“We recognise that these issues extend beyond our immediate properties and involve young people from the wider community. Whilst we cannot comment on individual cases due to tenant confidentiality, Choice takes all reports seriously and will continue to work closely with tenants, the PSNI, elected representatives and statutory agencies to resolve these matters together.
“The safety and wellbeing of our residents remain our priority. To help safeguard residents and protect property, a static security presence remains in place at the scheme. We understand that the PSNI is currently investigating the incident and, as such, we are unable to comment further while enquiries are ongoing.”
