Last night, June 28, at around 9.30pm, emergency services were called to Brighton seafront, near the Palace Pier.

Crews from HM Coastguard, RNLI and South East Coast Ambulance Service were in attendance, alongside officers from Sussex Police.

Sussex Police confirmed the response followed a report of concerns for a man’s welfare in the sea.

It said members of the public had entered the water to recover the man. One woman, who had been in the water with him, was also helped by the public.

A spokesman for the force said: “Emergency services responded a report of concerns for a man’s welfare in the sea near Palace Pier in Brighton on Sunday night, 28 June.

“Members of the public entered the water and recovered the man from the sea soon after 9.30pm.

“A woman, who had been in the water with him, was also helped out of the sea by the public.

“The man was treated by paramedics at the scene and was taken to hospital.”

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard added: “HM Coastguard received a report of two people in difficulty in the water at Brighton Pier, at around 9.30pm yesterday evening, June 28.

“Coastguard Rescue Teams from Newhaven and Shoreham, an HM Coastguard helicopter, RNLI lifeboats from Shoreham and Brighton, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Sussex Police were all sent.

“The two people were recovered to the shore and taken to hospital by ambulance.”
