Brighton’s historic Pier to Pier swim returned, with 500 participants taking part.
Leonardo Mafferyni was the fastest male swimmer in the race, finishing in 17 minutes and 48 seconds, while Martha Gibb was the fastest female at 19 minutes and 16 seconds.
Swimmers had to deal with some adverse conditions.
Lynette Slight, event director, said: “The current was very strong so everyone that did it did really well.”

Slight said: “We have our first wheelchair user, Peyton Vellaa, taking part today.
“The first in 90 years so it’s a big thing.
“It went really well for her and just highlights how we need more accessibility for people in the sea.”

Ms Slight introduced a non-competitive “Experience” category to the event to widen participation, allowing swimmers to take part in a relaxed, untimed format.
This year, 350 entered the Experience class, with another 120 competing in the main race.
An additional 30 completed the special 3k Bounce Back swim held to celebrate the 90th anniversary.

Ms Slight said: “We are the oldest swimming club in the country at 167 years old.
“The council donated our trophy 90 years ago and that’s what was given out today.
“I’d like to thank the volunteers from Brighton Swimming Club.
“They came at 5.30am.
“Without them, it couldn’t happen.”
