Crowd control measures are in place and access to a railway station has been restricted as visitors descend on a coastal town this evening.

But due to the volume of visitors, temporary measures are in place to keep order and manage departures from the railway station.

Southeastern bosses say it is in response to higher-than-usual demand for rail services.

The firm said: “We’ve had to implement crowd control measures and restrict access to the station because of the sheer number of customers trying to travel.

“Please travel a bit later if you can and, most importantly, be kind to our teams at the station.”

It comes as social media reports of a strong police presence on Margate beach this evening.

Pictures show scores of beachgoers enjoying the sun on the beach, as well as groups and officers at the railway station.

One person said online: “All day long gangs of unruly youths coming to town to create summer mayhem.”

Another reported seeing 13 police cars near Dreamland.

A dispersal order remains in place across the town however, in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour across Thanet.

It came into force on Tuesday and means officers have enhanced powers to move people of any age above 10, who are seen to be carrying out nuisance behaviour, away from the area.

It comes after police say they are launching a “summer crackdown” on antisocial behaviour – as traders previously described being scared of “intimidating” crowds of youths.

Some businesses say they were forced to close when large numbers of young people descended on Broadstairs over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, with 27 orders handed out across the district.

Police have been contacted for comment.
