The Duke Street factory was evacuated yesterday after what the company described as a “localised fire incident”, with all colleagues said to have been “quickly and safely” led from the building.

In a statement, Hovis said: “We are aware of a localised fire incident that took place at our Glasgow bakery today, on 18th June.

“All our colleagues were quickly and safely evacuated, the emergency services attended and we can confirm there were no injuries. The safety of our colleagues is paramount.

“Emergency services have now completed their duties, and we are currently working to investigate the cause and assess the full extent of the damage. We will reopen the site when it is safe to do so, and we expect this to happen in the next 24 hours.”

Firefighters were called to the factory at around 10.30am on Thursday, with three appliances and a height vehicle sent to tackle the blaze.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.27am on Thursday, 18 June to reports of a fire within a commercial building on Duke Street, Glasgow.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and one height vehicle to the scene.

“There were no reported casualties.

“Crews left just after 2pm after making the area safe.”
