Ten fire engines from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service rushed to the Waitrose supermarket on Nevill Road in Hove this morning.
Fire services were first contacted at 3.46 am.
Nevill Road remains closed while emergency services tackle the blaze.
It is believed the fire may have started in a ground floor refrigeration unit, with no people involved.
No casualties have been reported.
Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) also attended the scene.

Pictures from the Waitrose this morning show large plumes of grey smoke rising from the shop, with a large number of fire engines in attendance.
As many as 10 fire engines were in attendance at the height of the blaze.
Speaking at the scene, the Chief Commander of the fire operation said that the fire has been brought under control using hoses.
A spokesperson for ESFRS added: “This was a warehouse fire at a commercial property in Nevill Road, Hove.
“At the height of the incident there were 10 fire appliances from East and West Sussex in attendance and our Command Support Unit.”
