As of 2pm, a police spokeswoman confirmed that five arrests had been made after tensions between the Stop the Boats and Carnival Against Fascism rallies and police spilled over.
The Stop The Boats protest attracted around 300 people, while the counter protest attracted around 4,000 people.
At around 11am, police said: “Our officers are in place at a planned protest in Brighton today keeping you safe while facilitating peaceful protest.
“We have already arrested a man on suspicion of a public order offence in Queens Road and he has been taken to custody.”
At around 12.30pm, police gave the following update: “We have made a second arrest at the protest in Brighton.
“The person was detained on suspicion of breaching the peace and assaulting a police officer and has been taken to custody.”
At around 1.45pm, a further update was given saying three further arrests had been made, bringing the total to five so far.
The statement said: “We have made three further arrests at the protest in Brighton.
“A woman has been arrested on suspicion of breach of the peace and possession of a pyrotechnic item, a man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and another man has been arrested on suspicion of assault in three separate incidents.
“They have all been taken to custody.”
