Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 10.50am on Wednesday (June 10) to respond to concerns for the welfare of a man on the bridge.
Due to the nature of the incident, authorities said there is no estimated time for reopening the bridge.
National Highways Traffic Officers are helping with traffic management after motorists came to a standstill.

All southbound or clockwise M25 traffic is being diverted through the east bore tunnel.
Northbound traffic on the crossing now only has access to the west bore Dartford tunnel, which has a height restriction of 4’8m (15’9″).
There are hour delays for southbound traffic and 20 minute delays on the M25 clockwise.
Vehicles exceeding this height will need to use the clockwise M25.
Authorities warn of significant delays in both directions near the crossing.
An Essex Police spokesperson said: “A road closure is currently in place at the Dartford River Crossing as multiple emergency services respond to concerns for the welfare of a man on the bridge.
“The incident was first reported shortly after 10.50am this morning (Wednesday 10 June) and our response is ongoing.
“A diversion is in place utilising the tunnel, but delays are expected.
“Motorists, wherever possible, are urged to avoid the area.
“An update will follow as soon as possible.”
