Dartford Golf Club’s Haiden Matos showed remarkable poise under pressure on his way to winning the Kent Men’s Amateur Championship at the first attempt.
Matos, 17, served up one of the matches of the tournament at Littlestone when, four down with five to play in his semi-final against Knole Park’s James Norris, he won four of the final five holes before holing a decisive birdie putt at the first play-off to complete an extraordinary victory and book his place in the final.
There he met Wildernesse’s former champion Danny Jones and established an early advantage before Jones responded with a stunning 50-foot eagle putt at the seventh. Neither player was able to pull clear as momentum swung repeatedly throughout the afternoon.
With the match all square and tension mounting, the pivotal moment arrived on the iconic 17th. Matos showed remarkable imagination as he produced a delicate chip from the putting surface before holing an eight-foot putt for par to move one ahead after Jones narrowly missed his opportunity to halve the hole.
The teenager maintained his advantage on the final hole and, after another composed performance under pressure, secured a hard-fought victory.
The championship began with a 36-hole qualifying competition on the Friday, with the top 16 players progressing to the match play stages over the weekend.
Matos demonstrated his credentials with rounds of 70 and 67 to finish third, while recent Watson Trophy winner Lucas Dennison (Rochester & Cobham) matched the lowest round of the day with a brilliant 66 to comfortably secure his place in the knockout stages.
There was also an outstanding performance from 14-year-old Oscar Ford (Bearsted), whose rounds of 72 and 69 earned him a place in the top 16. With the cut falling at level par, reaching the match play stages was an achievement in itself.
Conor Byers (Langley Park) produced the standout performance of qualifying, following his opening 68 with a superb six-under-par 66 to secure the Scratch Cup and top qualifying position on 10-under-par, one shot ahead of Canterbury’s Dan Cooke.
Saturday’s opening round of match play saw top qualifier Byers safely avoid the traditional pitfalls of the number one seed, defeating Aston Burford (Chart Hills) 3&2. Elsewhere, Oliver Daws (Royal St George’s), Tommy Hulance (Dartford), Jones, Norris, Ford, Matos and Harry Spellman (North Foreland) all progressed to the quarter-finals.
In the last eight Daws edged past Byers 2&1 in a high-quality encounter, while Jones defeated Hulance 4&2. Norris overcame Ford in a match that went to the final hole, and Matos advanced with a 4&2 victory over Spellman.
Jones then produced a composed display to defeat Daws 3&2 and secure his place in the final. However, Matos was to prove too good with the title at stake.
