Cameron Devlin gave accounts of the attack in the days before he died on Boxing Day 2019, a court heard.
The married 34-year-old told police he was attacked after a Christmas night out with friends in Brighton.
He died five days later from undiagnosed sepsis caused by his injuries.
Cameron told police he was confronted by a group of men who started slapping him. He said he was punched to the ground and kicked in the head by two of the men.

The group ran away laughing and joking about what they had done, a court heard.
One of the men later bragged about the attack in a Snapchat conversation with a young woman before sending her a picture of his bloody shoe.
Oliver Priddle, 25, of Peacock Lane in Brighton, and Niraj Amaidas, 24, of Colwyn Close, Crawley, deny murder.
Jeremy Benson KC for the Crown told a jury in Brighton: “The defendants are charged with the murder of Cameron Devlin.
“In the early hours of December 21, 2019, they were involved in a fight with Mr Devlin outside a restaurant in Brighton.
“They assaulted him, an assault which included each of them kicking him in the head whilst he lay on the ground.
“Five days later he was dead.”

Cameron Devlin said he came round following the attack, surrounded by police.
He was treated in hospital before being sent home.
His condition deteriorated and he died in hospital on Boxing Day after his wife and mother called an ambulance.
“The prosecution say simply that each of these defendants joined in a violent and unlawful attack upon Mr Devlin and, in the awful result, he died,” Mr Benson said.
An eyewitness who saw the fatal kicks described them as “relatively light, but purposeful kicks.”
He said he saw the men run away towards Brighton train station, laughing and joking about what happened, Mr Benson told the jury.
Cameron Devlin told police the men “started” on him and were slapping his face. He said he wanted to get the men away from him.

Daniel Chandler told police: “Mr Devlin said that ‘the males were getting aggressive towards me and I had to stand up for myself’.”
Lewes Crown Court sitting in Brighton heard one of the accused sent a picture of his bloody shoe to a female friend hours after attacking Cameron Devlin.
Mr Benson said on the afternoon of December 21, 2019, Priddle had a conversation with a contact on Snapchat.
He wrote: “Yeah shit kicked off last night. Some guy tried to fight me and rugby tackled us both to the floor.
“I jumped up saw red and kick him in the face. Saw blood on my shoe and kinda freaked out when I got home.”
Mr Benson said: “He then sent her a photograph of a blood-stained right shoe.”
Examination of his phone found searches for “manslaughter case”.
Oliver Priddle and Niraj Amaidas deny murder. The trial continues.
In a statement released following his death, Cameron Devlin’s family said: “Every night in Brighton, a vibrant mix of people enjoy what this city is famous for – a great place to meet and celebrate life.
“Sadly, for Cameron, this night out ended in a brutal attack.”
