A supermarket sandwich deal and takeaway coffee simply doesn’t cut the mustard for me and paying a few quid more – once or twice a week – for an enjoyable sit-down lunch with a friend or colleague is as good for the mind as it is for the belly.
Here’s a round-up of my lunchtime favourites in Brighton right now.
Bill’s

A perennial Brighton favourite, there are ever-rotating deals galore to be had at Bill’s on North Road, including kids-eat-free and a stack of pancakes all day every Friday for a fiver.
Their current Heritage Lunch Set Menu is just £17.95 for two courses or £21.95 and available Monday to Friday from 11.30am through to 4pm.
Inspired by some of their customer favourite dishes from the past but bang-up-to-date in flavours, packed with colourful and seasonal ingredients.

Burger & Lobster

Dip into lunch at Burger & Lobster in The Lanes with their popular lunch deal, available Monday to Friday from noon through to 5pm.
Tuck into a proper, handmade sandwich with a choice of either beef and horseradish or prawn and lobster alongside fries and sauces for dipping for just £15. Can’t decide on your sandwich? Then you can do half-and-half to sample them both.

Fourth and Church

I think it’s fair to say that Fourth and Church is somewhat of a Hove institution.
A wine bar and store surround informal tables making it a perfect spot for a quick aperitivo drink and snack or a more leisurely lunch or supper dining experience.
Their lunch deal is available Monday to Saturday from noon until 3pm with two courses for £22 and three for £25.
The menu changes regularly but expect a choice of three starters, three mains and three desserts.
Although I haven’t sampled their lunch menu recently, reading the options online it’s both elevated and creative featuring salt cod fritters, confit chicken with Galician Ham XO, seasonal asparagus, baguette steak and salmon escalope with charred leaks.

Kindling

I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Kindling provides the best value lunch in the city at the moment.
Monday to Saturday from noon until 4pm, £15 buys you either their house burger or a quality flat iron steak with chips for £15.

Mowgli Street Food

Dig into a spread of Mowgli’s favourite dishes by choosing their Sharing Menu.
Priced at £25 per person for a minimum of two people, your meal starts with tasty yoghurt chat bombs – the ultimate Indian street food flavour grenade – and fenugreek fries, followed by a choice of three curries to share on the table from a menu of eleven.
Although the Mother Butter Chicken is perhaps the most popular, there’s a lot of choice for every taste.
Personal favourites of mine include Aunty Geeta’s Prawn Curry, Black Dahl and the wonderful Picnic Potato Curry.
Everyone also gets a roti bread plus there’s plenty of basmati rice to share.
Finished with a vanilla ice cream, it’s a truly affordable way to enjoy one of the UK’s most popular multiples.

Sabai Thai Elephant

Slap bang in the heart of the city centre, Sabai is literally a stone’s throw from bustling North Street and Royal Pavilion Gardens.
One of the city’s longest established Thai restaurants, it’s a go-to for many and I include myself in that.
Their lunch menu is available Monday to Friday from noon to 4pm, and Saturday until 3pm, with a pretty epic selection of starters, mains and – if you have room – desserts priced at £12.95 for one course or £17.95 for two.
If I’m honest, there’s not much on the menu that I haven’t sampled and thoroughly enjoyed over the years.
Portions are generous and everything is home-cooked using the freshest ingredients.
If you need a little midday pick-me-up then owner Gina’s spicy mojito comes highly recommended.
