The Worthing Green group have joined forces with the Worthing Community Independents to form the Green and Independent Alliance, on Worthing Borough Council.

The new group comprises of ten councillors, including six newly-elected Green representatives, making it the second largest political group on the council.

Green Party councillor Claire Hunt, leader of the new group, said the recent elections had shown residents were increasingly dissatisfied with two-party politics.

She added: “The Green Party has been elected on a message of hope, community cohesion and practical action, values that align with what the Worthing Community Independents have always stood for.

“By coming together, we will create a strong voice for residents and a positive force on the council focused on doing what is right for Worthing.”

The recent elections saw the borough council fall under no overall control, having previously been controlled by Labour.

Labour remains the largest party on the council but has been reduced to 15 seats, four short of an overall majority.

Worthing Community Independent Councillor Carl Walker, deputy leader of the new group, said the alliance reflected a united commitment to residents.

He said: “This alliance is rooted in a shared commitment to everyone that calls Worthing home, and a focus on making it the most thriving, inclusive place it can be.

“Residents rightly expect their councillors to work together where possible to tackle the issues facing the town—from housing and local services to supporting our town centre and strengthening community wellbeing.”

The borough council now consists of 15 Labour councillors, eight Green, six Conservative, five Reform, two Independent and one Liberal Democrat.
