Locals in the Dalmarnock and Rutherglen area began asking what was happening on community Facebook pages on Thursday evening, with one post asking: “Anyone know what’s on fire just along from Tesco?”.
Commenters quickly speculated about the source of the fire, with one person writing: “Looks like the nisa”, while another added: “It the shop at Farmcross.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Over 100 firefighters are currently tackling a fire on Baronald Street in Rutherglen.
“We were alerted at 6.19pm on Thursday, 7 May, to reports of a building fire.
“Operations Control have mobilised 22 fire appliances and additional resources to the scene of the fire which is affecting a commercial building.
“Crews remain at the scene.
“Nearby residents are asked to close windows and doors as a precautionary measure, and people are asked to stay clear of the area.”

A South Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said:” Roads closure at Farmeloan Rd/Dalmarnock Rd/Cambuslang Rd junction Rutherglen due to a fire.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a shop premises in Baronald Street, Rutherglen which was reported at 6.40pm on Thursday, 7 May, 2026.
“Baronald Street along with Dalmarnock Road and Farmeloan are currently closed.
Please avoid the area.”
