The first of five heritage street lighting columns has been reinstalled on Brighton’s promenade, returning to its original position near the Palace Pier.
Councillor Birgit Miller, cabinet member for culture, heritage and tourism at Brighton and Hove City Council, said: “It’s great to see this iconic lighting back in all its glory – the column feels brand new and the brackets and lanterns look absolutely stunning.
“The craftsmanship and expertise should be applauded.”
The Grade II-listed columns, complete with newly cast brackets and lanterns, are part of a pilot restoration scheme.
A second column was reinstalled further along Madeira Drive, with three more set to follow in the next couple of weeks.
After decades of exposure and decay, the cast-iron columns were sent to Cast Iron Welding Services (CIWS) for repair and recasting.
Lighting specialists CU Phosco manufactured the new lanterns.
The project was carried out with the approval of Historic England, using original designs, manufacturing techniques and, where possible, materials.
Cllr Miller said: “This is such an important project for restoring and renewing the heritage of our fabulous seafront. The columns, lanterns and brackets are part of the city.

“Whether silhouetted behind the setting sun or lighting up a darker evening, they’ll remain a feature of our skyline for years to come.”
The columns and brackets underwent thorough cleaning, structural repairs using gas fusion welding and precision machining.
They were finished with a durable paint system designed to withstand the coastal environment.
Decorative brackets were also restored and adapted to support the new lanterns.
The lanterns themselves combine heritage aesthetics with modern engineering.
Each is fitted with energy-efficient LED lighting calibrated to match the original colour temperature and appearance of the historical fittings.
Brighton and Hove City Council will now be reviewing the pilot before deciding on the project’s next steps.
Cllr Miller said: “Along with our new programme of maintenance and improvement, piece by piece we’re restoring our seafront to something our residents and visitors can enjoy and be proud of.”
