Liberal Democrat councillor for Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead Joanne Knowles donned the chains of office at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday (April 29).
She replaced Liberal Democrat councillor for Roffey North Tony Bevis, while Liberal Democrat councillor for Holbrook West Nigel Emery was named vice-chairman.
Cllr Knowles said it was an “honour” to be named chairman and praised the “masterclass in chairing” Cllr Bevis had given during his time in the role.
She added: “To be entrusted with this position by fellow members is a privilege and a responsibility that I take very seriously.”
A key focus for her year ahead will be encouraging young people who are not in education, employment or training to volunteer to help them “develop their confidence, gain new skills and improve their future employability”.
Ms Knowles reported that almost ten per cent of the district’s 19-24 year olds fell into this category – second only to Crawley in the county.
She added: “I aim to raise awareness of the vital role volunteers and community groups play and to highlight the practical ways young people are already creating positive change for themselves, others and the environment.
“These efforts strengthen our district’s well-being and civic pride.”
There were also a number of changes to the cabinet.
Councillor Jay Mercer resigned as cabinet member for environmental health, recycling and waste due to his increased responsibilities as leader of his group at West Sussex County Council. He will remain as a district councillor.
Cllr Mercer was replaced by Councillor David Skipp, while Councillor Anthony Frankland moved into the position of cabinet member for well-being, culture and green spaces, and Councillor John Olson took over as cabinet member for performance, customer service and communications.
