Bromley Council has confirmed that collections will move one day later than usual following both the Early May Bank Holiday on Monday, May 4, and the Spring Bank Holiday on Monday, May 25.

Residents are being advised to put their bins out by 6am on the revised collection day and leave them out until they have been collected, as collection times may vary during these period.

Early May Bank Holiday collection changes

Following the May Day Bank Holiday on Monday, May 4, bin collections will be revised as follows:

  • Monday, May 4 collections will take place on Tuesday, May 5
  • Tuesday, May 5 collections will move to Wednesday, May 6
  • Wednesday, May 6 collections will move to Thursday, May 7
  • Thursday, May 7 collections will move to Friday, May 8
  • Friday, May 8 collections will move to Saturday, May 9

Collections will return to their normal schedule from the week beginning Monday, May 11.

Spring Bank Holiday collection changes

Further changes will be in place after the Spring Bank Holiday on Monday, May 25:

  • Monday, May 25 collections will take place on Tuesday, May 26
  • Tuesday, May 26 collections will move to Wednesday, May 27
  • Wednesday, May 27 collections will move to Thursday, May 28
  • Thursday, May 28 collections will move to Friday, May 29
  • Friday, May 29 collections will move to Saturday, May 30

Normal collections will resume the following week.

The reminder comes amid ongoing efforts by Bromley Council to maintain high standards across its recycling and waste services, which see around 1.7 million collections carried out every month.

Previously speaking to the News Shopper, Councillor Will Rowlands, Executive Councillor for Environment, said the borough receives more positive feedback than complaints about its waste and recycling services.

He said:“We actually get more compliments than complaints these days about our recycling and waste services.

“As London’s top recycling borough we make around 1.7 million collections every month and whilst we strive to get it right each and every time, we recognise that mistakes will occur from time to time.

“With the statistics, we are pleased to note, showing that we get 99.9% of collections right, with around 1,800 enquiries per month.

“The remarkably low complaint record is no room for complacency as we continue to look for ways to improve our recycling partnership with residents and thank you to residents for their support and feedback.

Bromley Council provides collections for general household waste, recycling and food waste, with frequency depending on the type of property.

Most households receive:

  • A recycling bin for paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, tins and cans
  • A general waste bin for non-recyclable items
  • A weekly food waste collection, using food caddies and compostable liners

Residents are reminded to ensure recycling bins only contain accepted items, as contaminated recycling may not be collected.

The council also operates a paid garden waste subscription service, with collections similarly delayed by one day during bank holiday weeks.

If a bin is not collected on the revised day, residents are advised to wait until after 5pm and then report a missed collection through the council’s website.
