Oreo is being cared for at Cats Protection’s United Kingdom Cat Centre in Chelwood Gate, near Haywards Heath.
He was found with painful injuries and covered in oil.
Tania Marsh, deputy manager, said: “We don’t know how Oreo came to be in the abandoned car and we couldn’t trace an owner, but he wasn’t in a good state when he was found.
“His white fur was yellow, probably from being covered in engine oil and he was in desperate need of medical attention.

“He couldn’t open his eyes properly, which vets later found to be a painful condition called entropion.
“This is when the eyelids roll inward and the eyelashes scratch the eyes.”
It was clear that Oreo needed immediate surgery if there was any chance of saving his sight and while vets were able to save one of his eyes, the other had to be removed due to corneal changes.
He also had a sore patch of bare skin on his back but is now on the mend and is looking for a loving home.

Oreo’s treatment and aftercare have been costly, with Cats Protection launching a £3,000 fundraising campaign to help cover his medical bills.
If the fundraiser exceeds its target, additional funds will go towards helping other cats in urgent need of care.
Anyone wishing to donate to Oreo’s campaign can do so at justgiving.com.
Ms Marsh said: “Despite the treatment on his eyes, Oreo has adapted brilliantly to having only one eye and is now a happy and affectionate cat.
“The fur on his back has grown beautifully since being in our care and receiving the love he deserves.

“His striking white fur is coming back too as the yellowness fades.
“Oreo is a sweetheart. He loves to be petted and will paw at you for attention.
“When he’s in your arms he purrs so loudly, it’s adorable. He won’t let his past get him down – this cat is a born survivor.”
