Anthony Hayward, 24, of no fixed address, appeared before Crawley Magistrates’ Court on March 20 after breaching a community order imposed just days after his release from custody.
The court heard that Hayward failed without reasonable excuse to stay in contact with his responsible officer from December 10, 2025 – just two days after the order was made. He admitted the breach.
Magistrates were told the community order had been imposed following a string of theft offences across West Sussex in 2025.

These included stealing food worth £36.24 from an Asda petrol station in Worthing on October 6, as well as a separate theft from Greggs in Littlehampton later that month. Earlier offences included stealing two tubs of protein powder worth £86 from Holland & Barrett in Rustington.
The court also heard Hayward targeted multiple supermarkets and shops in August and October 2025.
These offences included stealing bottles of whiskey worth £53 from Sainsbury’s in Littlehampton, two bottles of Courvoisier brandy worth £64 from Tesco in Bognor Regis, and household goods worth £120 from a Tesco Express store in the same town.
In another incident, he stole washing tablets from Savers in Littlehampton.
He was convicted at West Sussex Magistrates’ Court on November 19, 2025. He was subsequently handed a community order on December 8, 2025.

However, magistrates heard that Hayward made no effort to comply with the order, failing to maintain any contact with probation services.
He also admitted a separate breach of post-custody supervision requirements, again for failing to stay in touch with his responsible officer since December 10.
Magistrates said Hayward had shown a “flagrant disregard for court orders” and had failed to engage with probation despite being given the opportunity to remain in the community.
The community order was revoked and hayward was jailed for 16 weeks. The sentence covers all of the original theft offences and will run concurrently.
He was also sentenced to an additional 14 days in prison for breaching post-release supervision requirements.
Hayward was remanded in custody following the hearing.
