East Dunbartonshire Council’s planning board unanimously granted permission for Tarmac to expand the extraction area at Douglasmuir Quarry off Stockiemuir Road, allowing operations in an area to the southwest of the original quarry, thereby extending its use by some five years until around 2035, followed by another year or two to restore the site.
Quarrying has been carried out at Douglasmuir since the 1970s under a string of planning permissions which have allowed for its continual operation, including blasting, which takes place around once per fortnight, with extracted materials taken off-site by trucks.

Council officers recommended the application be granted subject to a string of conditions and the completion of a legal agreement on a restoration bond.
These conditions included setting a date of June 2035 for the cessation of extractions, requirements for careful management of blasting and dust, and the completion of any archaeological investigations that may be required.
