Some early human, lost to the mists of time, eyed up a sheep’s udder and thought: ‘I want a piece of the action’.
Another strong-browed reprobate, not content to be guzzling the milk of another animal, saw a pool of it going off and decided to not only keep it, but to let it get increasingly mouldy and then finally eat it.
There is a point to publicising my strange daydreams; throughout history, us humans have had to take many leaps of faith to discover the delicacies which we rely on and enjoy today.

Popstar Dua Lipa is an unlikely contender to enter this pantheon of culinary pioneers.
But when the dust settles, it may be that one striking online confession is her true legacy, bops be damned.
Because about a year ago, she told her myriad fans that she loves to drink cola laced with – wait for it – pickle brine.
The TikTok algorithm monkeys must have been cackling with glee, because a trend was born, the Internet awash with content creators clamouring to film themselves trying the beverage.
KFC execs sat back and watched. But now, finally, they too are hopping on the bandwagon with their latest limited-time menu: a burger heavy on pickles and pickle sauce, frickles (fried pickles to you and I), pickle loaded fries and Pepsi served with a shot of pickle juice, should you wish to emulate the pop princess.
It seems like it’s gone down a treat, as when I visited my local eatery to try the menu, the pickle mania meal – a smorgasbord of the above – had sold out, including the pickle juice Pepsi.
Undeterred, I got myself a pickle burger and improvised my own beverage with the juice from a jar I had in the fridge, adding a couple of cornichons in lieu of lemon wedges.
Letting the flavours become well acquainted, I tucked into the burger.
The sauce was not a world away from a Ranch dressing, which I love, so this was a version of the tower burger I could get behind.
But the real question is, how was the drink I washed it down with afterwards?
Myself and Ms Lipa must be close descendants of the weirdos I mentioned above, because I too found it rather tasty.
Like salted caramel and sweet and sour sauce, there’s something to be said for contrasting flavours.
After all, lemon and lime are acceptable bed mates for a cola and they too are acidic and tangy.
So to all the doubters, I say: live and let live, and hurrah to culinary innovation.
