The Scottish singer and broadcaster’s new documentary, Michelle McManus Sings for the Pope, which airs on Good Friday at 9pm and Easter Sunday at 10am on BBC One Scotland, follows her deeply personal journey from Glasgow to Rome.
The documentary charts her recording of a new hymn in Scotland, her reconnection with her childhood Catholic faith, and her emotional performance in Italy.
Written by Rev John L. Bell of the Iona Community, the hymn Because was created for the 60th anniversary of SCIAF.
The new documentary reaches its climax with Michelle singing the hymn at the Palace of Castel Gandolfo before Pope Leo during the 10th anniversary Laudato Si’ Conference.
Michelle said: “It was such a privilege to be asked by SCIAF to sing the beautiful new hymn Because to celebrate 60 years of the organisation.
“Then to have the opportunity to take the hymn to Rome to represent Scotland at the Raising Hope Conference for the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’ with the Pope in attendance was truly one of the greatest honours of my life.”
The new documentary is produced by Glasgow-based Solus Productions and explores Michelle’s journey of “belief, purpose, and hope”.
Steve Allen, BBC Scotland’s commissioning executive, said: “This powerful documentary follows Michelle on a deeply personal journey of faith and music, making it perfect viewing for Easter.
“It’s a moving and uplifting programme, and I’m delighted that audiences will be able to experience Michelle’s remarkable journey.”
