Domestic abuser jailed after appeal

Reice Bennett (Image: Metropolitan Police)

Reice Bennett, also known as Reice Taylor, subjected his then-wife to a “horrific campaign of abuse” at their home in Eltham.

The 28-year-old repeatedly strangled Eloise Bennett until her vision went black, hit her with a leather belt, threw a beer at her, punched her in the face and kicked her to the point of leaving bruising across her buttocks.

Eloise, 30, told this paper: “Anything could start it. One time I made chicken fajitas for dinner, that wasn’t what he wanted so he strangled me until my eyes went fuzzy and I started blacking out. I thought I was going to die.”

Reice initially received a two year sentence suspended for two years after he pleaded guilty coercive and controlling behaviour, assault causing actual bodily harm, threats to kill, and intentional strangulation.

But the sentence was referred to the Court of Appeal under the unduly lenient scheme and judges decided the sentence should be increased to an immediate three year prison sentence.

Shop worker attacked schoolgirl

Mohammed Daqiq (Image: Met Police)

Shop worker Mohammed Daqiq lured a schoolgirl into the stockroom, locked the door and sexually assaulted her.

The 26-year-old worked at Bargain World in Sydenham when he carried out the attack, which left the 16-year-old girl traumatised.

In June 2024 the schoolgirl was walking past when Daqiq, who she knew from previous visits to the shop, asked her to come inside.

Daqiq locked the door and led her to the back storage room where he began to hug her, Woolwich Crown Court heard.

He ignored her attempts to pull away as he tried to kiss her, then sexually assaulted her and forced her hands onto his penis.

Throughout the attack the victim was telling Daqiq she did not want this and wanted to leave.

Daqiq was sentenced to three years in prison and will be deported from the UK.

A spokesperson for Bargain World said the business and its owners had no involvement in the incident, which was committed by a single employee.

Coach driver raped schoolgirls

Liam Ross (Image: Met Police)

Liam Ross, 30, from Dartford, paid a 12-year-old girl for sex claiming he didn’t realise she was so young.

Ross pleaded guilty to ten sex offences including the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

His offending took place in the borough of Bexley.

Ross said he believed the girl was old enough to consent, but rape of a child under 13 is a strict liability offence meaning the defendant’s belief about the child’s age or her consent does not factor in.

Judge Ruth Downing said she accepted Ross’ claim that he believed the girl was older, stating that she thought the same when she saw the victim.

Ross was also found guilty by a jury of the rape and sexual assault of another schoolgirl who was 16.

Judge Downing described it as a “difficult and rather disturbing” case, as Ross had pursued “lawful but inappropriate” relationships with schoolgirls who were over the age of consent.

He had received a letter from the police warning that his relationship with one 16-year-old girl put him at risk of criminal behaviour, but he continued undeterred.

Ross was jailed for 12 years.

Sex offender locked up again

Goherali Damani (Image: Met Police)

Goherali Damani, 60, of Pilgrim Close in Morden, has been jailed for breaching court orders.

He was previously convicted of sexually assaulting schoolgirls who were as young as 12 and exposing himself in front of women and children on buses across south London.

After that conviction in 2023, he was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order which banned him from using any public transport unless with an Oyster card registered in his name.

It also banned him from sitting next to any unknown female on public transport.

At Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court he pleaded guilty to breaching the order.

On November 18 last year he sat next to a woman on the 155 bus in Lambeth and had not tapped in with a card registered in his name.

Magistrates concluded he had a flagrant disregard for court order and so a one year immediate prison sentence was justified.

Akindele Balogun (Image: Kent Police)

Akindele Balogun, 43, from Orpington, dumped drugs out of a moving car.

In November 2024 officers attempted to stop Balogun’s vehicle on the M20 in Ashford.

During a chase, officers saw white packages being thrown from the car onto the motorway.

His vehicle was boxed in by police patrol cars and he was arrested.

Officers then retraced the chase route and found four more wraps of Class A drugs on the hard shoulder.

He was already under investigation for breaching probation by leaving London during curfew hours and giving a false address.

Balogun was jailed for four years after he was found guilty of two counts of possession with intent to supply.
