East Renfrewshire Council will reduce speed limits in an attempt to make roads safer and increase the number of people using different forms of transport.
Work has been ongoing to position the necessary poles, and the installation of the terminal speed limit signs will commence in April.
Once these are all in place, the new speed limits will be enforceable.

“Evidence shows that, if a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle travelling at 20mph, they’re seven times more likely to survive than if they’re hit at 30mph.
“We also expect lower speeds to make our communities feel safer and quieter.
“This will further strengthen our quality of life and encourage more people to use walking, wheeling, and cycling for short trips around their local area.”
The council clarified that main roads will generally stay at 30mph.
A spokesperson continued: “However, we know there are some stretches of main roads (such as nearby schools or town centres), where there are high numbers of pedestrians, and potentially vulnerable road users, that could benefit from lower speeds.
“These areas are being reviewed and, where suitable, will be recommended for a reduction to 20mph in a subsequent order.”

The changes also support the Scottish Government‘s National Strategy for 20mph, which aims to roll out this safer speed limit in built-up areas across Scotland by the end of 2025.
A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to reduce the speed limit on all appropriate streets in East Renfrewshire to 20mph was approved at the Full Council meeting on 22 October 2025.
