The town is aiming for national recognition through the new competition, launched by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
The programme builds on the success of the UK City of Culture title. For the first time, towns of every size are being invited to showcase bold ideas, original storytelling and community-powered culture.
Dartford confirmed its intention to submit an Expression of Interest by March 31.
Dartford’s bid is being led by the Dartford Town Centre Partnership, in collaboration with Dartford Borough Council and a growing network of partners.
Businesses, creatives, schools, community groups and residents have all contributed ideas, endorsements and insights.

Cllr Jeremy Kite, leader of Dartford Borough Council, said: “I’m passionate about culture and creativity in our town, and I think we’re very fortunate to have a town bursting at the seams with it.
“Culture in Dartford is not merely confined to one venue or organisation. It lives in businesses, community halls, schools, rehearsal rooms, high streets and public spaces. It lives in its people. If you love Dartford, we’d love to hear your story to help shape our bid.”
From the town’s industrial heritage to celebrating its world-famous music heritage through statues of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
The Sir Peter Blake Gallery, a year-round programme of free community events, and ongoing support for the Orchard Theatre also form part of the town’s year-round cultural offering.
Residents are being encouraged to share their own Dartford stories – whether a treasured memory, a community tradition, a meaningful place or a moment that captures the spirit of the town. The invitation is open to everyone: long-time locals, newcomers, businesses, performers, volunteers, schools and community groups.
If Dartford is shortlisted, this partnership will expand further to co-design a full Town of Culture programme rooted in Dartford’s identity, diversity and ambition.
