Police were called to a report of concern for a man’s welfare in London Road, St Leonards, at around 12.30pm on Friday (February 27).
Officers attended and located a man in the street, who set himself alight and approached them, Sussex Police said.
The fire was extinguished and the man, who is 49 and of no fixed address, was treated by the ambulance service before being arrested on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm.
He has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries believed to be serious at this time.
A cordon was put around the Jobcentre Plus in the town centre and there was a large police presence following the incident.
