The Spa Valley Railway, running from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, to Eridge, in East Sussex, has launched a fundraising appeal to replace the Broom Lane Bridge.
Parts of the bridge, built in the 1890s, are corroding, posing potential risks for rail operations if left unchecked.
The bridge is located between High Rocks and Groombridge.
To preserve smooth operations on the Spa Valley Railway, the bridge is regularly inspected, has a speed restriction, and is subject to enhanced monitoring.
It has also recently undergone load testing to prove its continued suitability for rail traffic.
Considering options to either repair or replace the bridge, it was decided that replacement was the most cost-effective option with a price tag of over £400,000.
As of late February 2026, over £105,000 has been raised for this cause.
The entire replacement of the Broom Lane Bridge will be carried out in three phases.
Phase one—a certified replacement bridge design—was estimated at £30,000 and has been completed by a company specialising in bridge design, construction, and installation.
The second phase, involving the construction and painting of the new bridge costing approximately £150,000, will see the new bridge delivered to the site in March 2026.
The third and final phase, estimated to cost over £320,000, involves the removal of the old bridge and the installation of the new one, as well as associated brick and track works.
This phase will take place from February 23 through April 2, 2026.
During this time, a variety of special events will be held at the Spa Valley Railway to raise funds for the project.
Alongside these events, a sponsored walk is scheduled for March 29, in which fundraisers will walk along the railway line.
Donations of any amount are welcome and can be made via their JustGiving page, bank transfer, or by sending cheques to the Broom Lane Bridge Appeal.
Gift Aid donations are also accepted, adding an extra 25p for every £1 donated.
The bridge replacement is set to be one of Spa Valley Railway’s most substantial projects to date, preserving the rail line for future generations to enjoy.
