Goalkeeper Glenn Morris admitted Gillingham are becoming a “nearly team” after another narrow away defeat.
The Gills lost 1-0 at Chesterfield on Tuesday night, days after a weekend loss at Crewe by the same scoreline.
Those defeats leave the Gills 14th in the League 2 table with two-thirds of the season played.
The keeper pointed to recent results as evidence that the margins remain fine, but stressed that performances now need to turn into points.
“You look at Saturday and we felt like we were the better team against a side right up there. Tuesday was very even again,” said Morris.
“We can’t be a nearly team. We’re being a bit of a nearly team at the minute. We’ve got to find a way to win a game, get a goal and get points on the board.”
Despite the disappointment, Morris is adamant the focus must quickly turn to Saturday’s home clash against Oldham.
“We haven’t got time,” he said. “It’s a home game and we have to win. We’ve got to attack it and come away with three points.
“At the moment it’s just about concentrating on that game on Saturday.”
Morris also paid tribute to the travelling supporters and urged the squad to stick together.
“They stuck with us again all night and the numbers were brilliant,” he said. “Hopefully we can repay them at home.
“We’ve got to stay positive, stick together and do the basics right. Maybe we get a bit of luck and go on a run – but it’s up to us to change it.”
The decisive moment at Chesterfield came from a set-piece, continuing a frustrating trend for Gillingham on the road, and Morris felt the manner of the defeat was particularly hard to take.
“Disappointed,” he said. “We started the game really well and they scored against the run of play. It felt like it took the stuffing out of us a little bit.
“It’s very similar to the last few away games. There’s not much in it, and a set-play has decided it again, and we’ve come out on the wrong side of it. That’s quite hard to take.”
Morris felt chances were limited at both ends, with neither goalkeeper overworked for large spells of the game.
“Their goalie hasn’t really had many saves to make. We didn’t work him enough,” he said. “I didn’t really feel like they created too much either, apart from a few at the end when we were pushing and it was a bit more open.
“It’s just disappointing to come away with nothing again.”
The goal itself came from a scrapp corner, something Morris acknowledged has become a concern after being a strength earlier in the season.
“It was a scrappy one at the near post,” he said. “They’ve gone through bodies, it’s fallen to their lad and he’s poked it in.
“We’ve been very strong on set-plays for most of the season, but if it keeps happening then we’ve got to eradicate it.”
