Plans approved by Bromley Council will see the long-vacant former Debenhams store at The Glades redeveloped into a mix of retail and leisure units.
The scheme, led by The Glades Shopping Centre and submitted by planning consultancy Lichfields, will divide the large department store into several units across multiple levels, including a 24-hour leisure venue with access from Elmfield Road and new retail space aimed at attracting a major operator.
The leisure space has been approved for indoor sport, recreation or fitness use, which could include a gym or fitness studio, although no operator has yet been confirmed.
The redevelopment will also include shopfront alterations, roof works, and public realm improvements such as seating, planters and improved pedestrian access.
Planning permission was granted on February 3, with construction expected to begin later this year and the new units due to open in winter 2026.
Reacting to the news on Next Door, News Shopper readers shared what they’d like to see the retail units become, with a mix of suggestions for both big franchises and independent stores.
Among them were calls for a major anchor retailer such as John Lewis, as well as brands like The Range, B&M and even Aldi.
Others said they would prefer something “more upmarket”, suggesting furniture or electrical retailers.
A handful of commenters also suggested the idea of everyday high street staples, including coffee shops, charity shops, barbers and takeaways, being housed in the new retail units.
On Facebook other readers questioned the idea of another fitness facility, pointing out that there are already several gyms within close proximity of the former Debenhams, including the council-run Pavilion leisure centre.
Others suggested the space would be better suited to family-focused leisure attractions such as climbing walls, trampolines, a skating rink or soft play, while some said they would prefer to see a major retailer like John Lewis instead.
