Three vehicles are understood to be involved on the stretch between the A20 and Haven Drive junctions, according to traffic reporting service Inrix.

It says there is congestion on surrounding routes, including White Horse Hill and Canterbury Road, while traffic seeks alternative routes to bypass the closure.

The incident took place at about 5.20pm.

Pictures show congestion throughout the area and a fire engine attending the scene.

Cars are being forced to turn around at the roundabouts at either end of the closure.

At 9pm, the road still remained shut with crash investigation work taking place.
