The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning

Three council workers were assaulted in the city centre in the early hours of this morning, police have confirmed.

At around 12.40pm on Saturday, January 31, police received a number of reports that three men, believed to be Belfast City Council workers, had been attacked by two men while working in the Little Donegall Street area.

The injured men had been punched to the face and neck, with one of the men also sustaining an injury to his hand. They attended hospital for treatment.

It was reported that an unknown man approached the workers and began being verbally abusive, before physically assaulting them. He was then joined by a second man who also physically assaulted the men.

Issuing an appeal for witnesses and information, Inspector Knowles said: “We received a number of reports at around 12.40am that three men, believed to be council workers, had been attacked by two unknown males while carrying out their duties in the Little Donegall Street area.

“Officers spoke with all three of the injured men, who had been punched to the face and neck, with one of the men also sustaining an injury to his hand.

“It was reported that an unknown male had approached the council workers and began being verbally abusive towards them, before physically assaulting them. He was then joined by a second, unknown male, who also physically assaulted the men.

“One of the suspects was described as being of slim build with blond hair and was wearing a grey tracksuit.

“All three injured men subsequently attended the hospital for treatment to their injuries.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the assaults or who has any information that might assist, to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 61 of 31/01/26.

“You can also submit a report or information online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org/.”

Belfast City Council has been contacted for comment.
