Fashion chain on brink of collapse with 1,000 jobs at risk across UK stores

Quiz, the fashion retailer, has announced it is in administration, with 44 stores across the UK and approximately 1,000 employees whose jobs are currently at risk. The Telegraph reported that the company has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.
Quiz’s website lists its 44 stores in various locations across the UK, in Belfast Castlecourt, Craigavon, Newry and Newtownabbey along with 6 further concessions. Just a few days prior, Quiz had disclosed that it was considering several options to secure its future following “disappointing” Christmas sales. There are also 41 Quiz concessions in stores like New Look listed.
These options included securing new financing and potentially closing some stores. A spokesperson for Quiz confirmed that its stores remain open and it’s business as usual for the time being.
If this goes ahead, it will be the third time in six years that Quiz has entered administration. The founding Ramzan family had previously put the business into administration less than a year ago, resulting in the closure of 23 stores, before buying back the remaining assets as part of a pre-pack deal.
Quiz also closed 11 of its stores in 2020, attributing its struggles to the coronavirus > Covid lockdowns. In recent years, the company has been dealing with an increase in employer National Insurance contributions, as well as rising minimum wage and energy costs.
A company spokesperson stated: “Like many other high street retailers, we have faced significant headwinds over the past 12 months, including the impact of fragile consumer confidence and a significant increase in business rates and employer costs. While we continue to explore the options available to us, we have today filed Notices of Intention to Appoint Administrators which will give us the time we need to tr y and secure a positive outcome.”
