The incidents concern the Elmfield Drive project in Billingshurst, an 83-home development being carried out by Bellway Homes.
Bellway has been using the nearby Dadswell Drive to gain access to the site, which residents say has caused chaos in the small road.
In a letter to developers, Sam Bacon, on behalf of the Dadswell Drive Neighbourhood Group, accused Bellway of “attempting to piggyback” the new estate onto the cul-de-sac and said near-miss incidents had been caused by HGVs that had become stuck in the road.
He added: “To those of us that live and use this road every day it is very clear that our little street will not be able to handle the enormous upheaval of daily traffic movements and it will spoil the community feel of our street.
“The application was heavily objected to by many local stakeholders and residents, and will continue to be subject to an unwelcome reception from us and the wider village.
“We’ve already had two near-miss incidents since work began in December where Dudman HGVs have got stuck in Dadswell Drive whilst trying to find the site, blocking access to residents and causing a hazard whilst children were walking to school.”
Mr Bacon also said developers had not established a complaints register and residents had not been advised how to log the incidents, leaving them forced to complain to the council.
Bellway have since moved construction access to another point off of nearby Wooddale Lane, however residents are seeking assurances that the same is applied for all access to the development going forward, including residential traffic.
A spokeswoman for Bellway Homes said: “Bellway is aware of the concerns raised regarding vehicle access around the Elmfield Green development.
“We take these matters extremely seriously and are reviewing the reported incidents as a priority.
“We have contacted our site team to ensure that appropriate measures are in place, including clear routing instructions for all contractors and suppliers.
“We are also engaging with residents and the local authority to understand the issues fully and to implement any further steps necessary to maintain safety and minimise disruption.
“As with all our developments, the safety of construction staff, residents, road users and the wider community remains our highest priority.”
