The unnamed officer, referred to as Officer X, was found to have breached multiple standards of professional behaviour, including honesty, integrity, and confidentiality, during a Sussex Police misconduct hearing on December 15, 2025.
The hearing was told about two individuals, referred to as Person A and Person B.
Person B was in a long-term relationship with Officer X, however they then began a relationship with Person A in 2023, while still in a relationship with the officer.
Officer X subsequently became aware of this new relationship.
The officer was found to have submitted false allegations about Person A to Sussex Police in November 2023, and to have sent an email to an inspector making false statements.
They submitted the false allegations under the pseudonym ‘Ryan Elms’.
The officer was also found to have fabricated emails, alleging that Person A was being investigated for harassment, and attributing these to another officer.
They additionally searched Sussex Police computer systems to obtain information about Person A with no proper policing purpose.
The officer admitted three misconduct allegations during the hearing. Two more were found to be proved. The officer cited mental health struggles as a contributing factor.
They were granted full anonymity, based on an assessed risk of harm should their name be made public.
The officer claimed they had been signed off work with depression and anxiety, and said their judgment was clouded by the issues going on in their personal life.
Despite these mitigating factors, the panel concluded that dismissal without notice was the only appropriate outcome.
