Zak, from Co Down was diagnosed with stage four Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and is now raising money for cancer support charities

Nine-year-old Zak Fletcher and his family were welcomed to Parliament Buildings this week by Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly MLA and Strangford MLA Harry Harvey. Zak visited the grounds to receive a donation to his inspirational “Zak Gives Back” charity campaign.

Zak, from Co Down, was diagnosed with stage four Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and has faced his treatment with extraordinary courage and determination over recent years. A keen sportsman who loves rugby, sailing, and golf, Zak has displayed resilience and positivity throughout his cancer journey qualities that have inspired his local community and beyond.

Now, through his “Zak Gives Back” campaign, Zak is raising funds for the cancer support charities that helped him and his family during his treatment. His determination to give back and help other children facing similar challenges has touched hearts across Northern Ireland.

Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly praised Zak for his bravery and compassion.

She said: “Zak is an exceptionally brave and inspiring young man. Despite everything he’s been through, his determination to give back and support the charities that have stood by him and his family speaks volumes about his character. It was a privilege to welcome Zak and his family to Parliament Buildings and to hear more about his fundraising campaign. I know his story will continue to inspire communities right across Northern Ireland.”

Harry Harvey MLA, who organised a Christmas Sit Out in Ballynahinch in December to raise funds for “Zak Gives Back”, said he was delighted to hand over the proceeds to Zak at Stormont this week.

“In December, I held a Christmas Sit Out in Ballynahinch to raise money for Zak’s charity appeal, and I was overwhelmed by the generosity of our local community, People came from near and far to show support, and we even had Party Leader Gavin Robinson join us on the day on his journey home from London.

“So far, we have raised more than £700 which I was honoured to hand over to Zak this week to support his chosen charities. To see him now leading his own campaign which has raised around £35,000 to help others truly brings this effort full circle. I’d encourage everyone to get behind ‘Zak Gives Back’ and support the vital work of these charities.”

Donations to Zak’s fundraising campaign can be made online through the “Zak Gives Back” page here.
