A security alert in West Belfast has ended with a controlled explosion.

Police were called to the Divis Road area on Wednesday, January 14, at around 10.20am following reports of a suspicious object in the area.

Ammunition Technical Officers attended the scene and carried out a controlled explosion on what is believed to be a viable device.

The Divis Road was closed for a number of hours due to the incident but has now reopened.

Inspector Natalie Roberts said: “We received a report at around 10.20am on Wednesday, that a suspected viable device had been left in the area.

“Ammunition Technical Officers attended and carried out a controlled explosion on the device, which is believed to have been viable.

“Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would appeal to anyone with any information to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 404 – 14/01/26.
