The £18.3million project has reached a construction milestone with the installation of its footbridge and lifts, marking significant progress towards its planned autumn opening.
Located in the Barrhead area, Balgray Station is designed to improve transport links and encourage sustainable travel to and from Glasgow, while supporting the region’s ongoing growth and development.
Ashley McDonald, scheme project manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: “Strengthening rail connections in East Renfrewshire gives people another practical, reliable alternative to travelling by car.
“Better links mean shorter journeys, improved access to jobs and education, and simpler everyday travel.
“Installing the footbridge and lifts has really brought the station together.
“It means we can now start focusing on the details that will ensure it’s ready to welcome passengers later this year.”

The station is expected to improve access to key local attractions such as Dams to Darnley Country Park, and is aimed at supporting travel for work, education and leisure.
Construction began in July 2025 and has since made steady progress, with platforms and a new car park already taking shape.
The footbridge not only connects the platforms but also provides step-free access, ensuring the station is accessible to all passengers.
Work will now focus on finalising the station building and car park, and will include cycle parking, accessible parking bays, electric vehicle charging points and a dedicated footpath linking the station to the country park.
East Renfrewshire Council leader Owen O’Donnell welcomed the news and praised the project as a vital development for the area.
He added: “I’m delighted that that this major project milestone has been completed as this is such an important step in progress towards the new rail service.
“Balgray station is set to be a very welcome addition for our growing community in Barrhead, making it much easier for residents and visitors to travel to and from Barrhead and Dams to Darnley Country Park using public transport.”
The scheme forms part of the wider Glasgow City Region City Deal, a multi-million-pound investment programme funded by the UK and Scottish Governments and East Renfrewshire Council.
Balgray Station is being delivered by Network Rail in collaboration with East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland , ScotRail and Story Contracting.
It is intended to support the ongoing development of Barrhead and surrounding areas, providing improved transport options for new and existing residents.
The new station is also expected to help reduce road congestion by encouraging more people to use trains for their daily journeys.
