Supplies in East Grinstead should be fully restored by Wednesday January 14, while drinking water supplies will begin to be restored today, Tuesday, January 13, according to water company South East Water.
Many homes and businesses in the town have had no water for four days, caused by a combination of burst pipes and severe weather from the recent Storm Goretti.
The problems have spread as far as Uckfield and Eastbourne, although East Grinstead has been particularly badly affected.
In a statement on Tuesday 13, South East Water said: “We are sorry to our customers in East Grinstead and the surrounding areas, who are unfortunately continuing to experience no water, intermittent supply or low pressure.
“We are seeing an improvement in the amount of water in our storage tanks, meaning that, throughout the course of today and tomorrow, we will gradually be bringing customers in East Grinstead back into supply.
“Full supplies to all 16,500 customers are expected to be restored tomorrow afternoon.”
The company has told customers that it is common for tap water to look cloudy or brown as it returns to taps, because of iron or manganese deposits in the pipes.
It has advised people to run their taps until the water turns clear, at which point it is safe for drinking, washing and cooking.
South East Water is continuing to provide bottled water stations and are using tankers to support the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.
The company was criticised over the weekend for providing a water station near to East Grinstead train station.
A combination of rail replacement buses and people driving to get water brought the town centre to a standstill and was labelled “bedlam” by East Grinstead and Uckfield MP, Mims Davies.
