The 54-year-old woman was walking in Moredun Park on Glenniffer Road at around 3.40pm yesterday (January 9) when she was assaulted by the man.
She went to hospital to be treated for non-serious injuries.
An extensive investigation is now underway and police say they will be carring out additional patrols in the area.

The suspect is described as being a white man and around 5ft 8in tall with a stocky build. He spoke with a local accent.
He was wearing a dark jacket and a hood or hat which had distinctive glasses or goggles, and a dark scarf or snood covering his face.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information or who recognises the description of the suspect to come forward.

Detective Constable Michael Bowles said: “We understand that incidents like this are concerning for the local community but please be assured we are doing everything we can to trace the man responsible.
“Extensive enquiries remain ongoing and I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time, or who recognises the description of the man, to contact us.
“Additional patrols will be carried out in the area and I would encourage anyone with any questions or information to approach these officers.”
