Trevor Baker was driving from his home in Saltdean shortly before 3pm to pick up his child from school when he heard a car horn being sounded behind him followed by police sirens.
“Then I saw a van coming down along Marine Drive,” Trevor said.
“I thought, ‘oh my god, any minute now he’s going to hit a bus or a motorcyclist’. I knew that any minute there would be a pile up.”
The van was then involved in a serious crash with other vehicles, which Mr Baker did not witness, but saw the aftermath.
“Everyone was walking around dazed. I’m lucky I wasn’t further along the road where it happened.
“People were walking round looking dazed.
“It was just dreadful.”
A spokesman for Sussex Police has confirmed that the van was stolen and that a 20-year-old man has been arrested.
“Police received a report of a stolen vehicle in Hamsey Road, Saltdean, at about 2.30pm on January 8.
“The vehicle, a Royal Mail van, was traced by officers and drove away from officers in Peacehaven at about 3.05pm.
“After a short pursuit, the van crashed into three other vehicles on the A259 at Ovingdean at about 3.10pm.
“Fortunately no other drivers required hospital treatment.
“The driver of the van, a 20-year-old man from Peacehaven, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, and aggravated vehicle taking.
“He was taken to hospital as a precaution.
“Witnesses or anyone with further information about the collision or the van driving who has not already come forward, including anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage, can report it to Sussex Police online and quote serial 707 of 09/01.”
