The arts and crafts retailer is set to close this February
Iceland could be taking over a soon-to-close Hobbycraft store in Kent, newly submitted plans have revealed. The arts and crafts retailer is due to shut its Strood Retail Park branch on February 14, KentLive understands, and is running a closing down sale in the run up to this date.
Signage displayed on the store advertises reductions of up to 20 per cent off as the retailer sheds its remaining stock. The branch, which occupies a building owned by Ropemaker Properties, had previously closed temporarily back in May 2025 before re-opening in August.
Now it appears the shop will be closed permanently when it shuts its doors on Valentine’s Day, though another national chain already has its eye on taking over the space. Iceland Foods has submitted proposals to Medway Council to transform the site.
The documents detail alterations to the shopfront to accommodate the new supermarket. This would involve the installation of two full height shopfronts and the replacement of the existing bi-parting entrance doors and side screens.
Alterations would also be made within the servicing area. These proposals are awaiting a decision from Medway Council, which is expected to be given by Tuesday, February 24.
It is not known if there is an opening date yet planned for the new Iceland store. KentLive has approached the supermarket chain for further details.
Iceland already operates a number of branches in the Medway area including in Gillingham Retail Park, Chatham High Street and Gillingham High Street, as well as Strood town centre. Following the closure of the Strood Hobbycraft store, the next nearest branch will be found in Maidstone, while the brand also operates stores in Thanet and Ashford.
