An icy warning has been issued to parents
An icy warning has been issued to parents after children were spotted playing on a frozen pond amid plunging temperatures. Headcorn Parish Council (HPC) posted some advice online and called for “common sense” alongside a picture of kids walking on ice.
The council said that during a 10-minute period on Monday (January 5) two younger teenagers, two older teenagers, and a small girl with a toddler walked across dangerous ice in the village near Ashford. The post was shared on by several concerned locals who were quick to show support for the message, and expressed that they had seen similar problems in surrounding towns.
HPC said on Facebook: “Hello Everyone! We know its snowing, we know its frozen outside, but if you have kids can we just let you know that walking out on to what looks like an iced over pond or other water source is potentially fatal.
“Can you all please have a word with your children and make sure they know how dangerous this can be too. We don’t want to hear about some horrible tragedy all for the sake of using a bit of common sense.
“Especially when its older children who look old enough to know better as they might encourage a younger child to copy them. I watched the camera yesterday and over a 10-minute period two younger teenagers, two older teenagers and a small girl with a toddler went on to the ice.
“Sometimes what might look fine can go wrong in a split second. Please take care out there everyone.”
Temperatures reached as low as -12 in parts of Britain amid an Arctic blast to start the new year.
