There will be road closures and temporary traffic lights during the works
A busy A-road in Kent will see roadworks for six weeks from SGN. The gas company is replacing the gas main on the A26 London Road in Southborough in Tunbridge Wells.
Work starts on Monday (January 12) and SGN said it is expected to last for “approximately six weeks”.
It is replacing old metal pipes in phases along the A26. It is part of its 30-year programme of replacing old mains with reliable plastic pipe.
The A26 is notorious for congestion at peak times, as most of the area’s secondary schools are on or near the road.
It is the main road between Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge, and leads to the A21 and M25. It is also impacted by drivers trying to avoid delays on the A21.
SGN engineers will be working on the A26 between its junctions with Western Road and Meadow Road. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.
- Western Road will be closed to motorists at its junction with A26 London Road from Monday (January 12) for approximately three weeks. Diversion via Bedford Road, Meadow Road, A26 London Road and vice versa.
- The Meadow Road junction will be shut to motorists from Monday, February 2 for approximately three weeks. Diversion via Bedford Road, Western Road, A26 London Road and vice versa.
Temporary traffic lights will be used on the A26 around the SGN works. These will be manually controlled between 7am and 7pm on weekdays; 8am and 6pm on Saturdays; and 9am and 5pm on Sundays, to “help minimise disruption on this busy route”, said SGN.
An SGN spokesperson said: “Signed diversions will be in place for road users affected by the closures. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses. All businesses will remain open as usual during this work.”
“We understand roadworks can be frustrating. However, this work is essential to ensuring nearby properties continue to receive a safe and reliable supply of gas.”
