National Highways said the tunnel will reopen once it is safe to do so as specialist contractors are being deployed to treat the carriageway
National Highways have closed a busy tunnel due to a significant diesel spillage.
The A20 Roundhill Tunnel in Kent has been closed coastbound on Tuesday, January 6 is between the M20/A259 near Folkestone and the A260 near Hawkinge due to the diesel spillage.
The closure is to allow specialist teams to treat the carriageway and ensure it is safe for road users. Several other routes are closed this week for road works.
“Drivers are advised to follow the signed diversion routes and allow extra time for their journeys,” the traffic authority said.
Road users are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs if heading eastbound: exit the M20 at junction 13 onto the A259 Churchill Avenue, travel east to the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout, take the exit onto the A260 Canterbury Road and head north and at the Spitfire Way roundabout take the third exit on to the A20 coastbound.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey,” National Highways said.
The tunnel will reopen once it is safe to do so, according to National Highways. Several other road closures were implemented this week for road works on the M2, M20, A2, A282, M25 and many other vital routes.
