In total, 720 secure storage spaces were installed last year, including 198 spaces in December across 33 on-street units.

Each of the units holds up to six cycles and provides residents with “safe, and reliable places” to store their bikes.

Glasgow City Council plans to install as many as 3,000 cycle storage spaces across five years.

Since the scheme was piloted in 2021, the council has delivered 1,700 spaces in 300 locations.

According to the local authority, the units, which are managed by Cyclehoop, are 95% full. More than 2,300 residents have been placed on a waiting list.

    Spaces cost £84 per year.

The news comes several months after Glasgow’s public cycle scheme switched operators in November.

nextbike by TIER departed after eleven years of service after Swedish firm Voi was given a five year contract by the council.

In August, Councillor Angus Millar, the council’s climate and transport convener, said he was pleased to have the firm “on board”.

He said: “On-street cycle hire offers a practical, cost-effective option to people who may not own a bike to get about the city, and in securing the scheme’s next phase of delivery with our new operator we look forward to building on its success.”
