Emergency services were called to Worthing after reports a woman had fallen from the town’s pier into the sea on Saturday (January 3) afternoon.
Multiple police vehicles and ambulances attended the seafront incident as well as Shoreham RNLI and the coastguard.
It was the Shoreham team’s first callout of the new year.

The crew managed to locate the woman, who had drifted west of the pier, and pulled her from the sea into the lifeboat.
The woman was taken straight to the beach, where paramedics and other emergency services were waiting. She was then taken to hospital for checks.
Adam Cairns, Shoreham RNLI inshore lifeboat helm, described the conditions of the sea.
“Although the sea conditions were calm and we had good visibility, the northerly wind meant that air temperatures were near freezing, combined with the low sea temperature,” he said.
“With the amount of time the casualty had spent in the water, they were very cold.
“With some excellent inter-agency working with our partners from Sussex Police, local coastguard rescue teams and South East Coast Ambulance Service, we were able to quickly locate the casualty once on scene, protect them from deteriorating further and transfer them to clinical care with the support of the teams on the beach.”

If you see someone in difficulty in the water, always phone 999 and ask for the coastguard.
A Sussex Police spokeswoman said: “Emergency services responded to a report that a woman had fallen from Worthing Pier just after 1pm on January 3.
“The woman, in her 30s, was brought to safety by the RNLI lifeboat from Shoreham and has been taken to hospital for checks.”
