The B2112 near Burgess Hill was closed for more than four hours yesterday (January 1) following the collision.
Police, the ambulance and air ambulance service were on the scene responding to the incident.
A spokesman for Sussex Police has confirmed that a woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries and another arrested following the crash.
He said: “Emergency services responded to a collision involving two vehicles on the B2112 near St George’s Park at about 12.20pm on 1 January.
“The collision involved a black BMW and a silver Ford Mondeo.
“The driver of the Ford Mondeo, a 74-year-old local woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she remains.
“The driver of the BMW, a 34-year-old local woman, sustained minor injuries. She was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injuries by dangerous driving and on suspicion of drug driving, and has been bailed, pending further investigation.
“Witnesses or anyone with information such as dashcam footage who has not already come forward is asked to report it to Sussex Police online or email collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk and quote Operation Seaway.”
