Officers are continuing to appeal for further witnesses and footage

Two people have been charged after an elderly man died when he was hit by a car in Gillingham. The man was struck by a grey Mercedes estate on the A289 Gads Hill shortly after midday on Monday (December 29), Kent Police said.

The force added that the pedestrian, a man in his 80s, “had been carried by the car” and was located a distance away on the ground at Grange Road. Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) treated the man but, despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is reported the Mercedes had continued on and was later found in Eastcourt Lane, where the two occupants had left on foot. On Thursday (January 1), Albert Matraxhiu, 28, of Orange Hill Road, Edgware, was charged with death by dangerous driving.

Erald Paci, 29, of Five Way Court, Chatham, was charged with perverting the course of justice. Both men are Albanian nationals and have been remanded to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday (January 2).

Officers are continuing to appeal for further witnesses and footage that may assist their investigation. Anyone with information should call 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.police.uk, quoting reference EW/LB/093/25.
