A person died after being hit by a train near Canterbury East railway station last night (Tuesday, December 23). The incident on the line between Dover and Faversham happened at 11.19pm.
Emergency services were called to deal with the incident and did not leave the scene until 6.49am today (Wednesday), said Southeastern. The final two trains last night on the line were diverted to Ramsgate, and replacement buses used.
Once 999 crews left, engineers came on site to work on the train, with lines staying closed and trains running between the stations cancelled or revised.
A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to the line near Canterbury East railway station at 11.19pm yesterday (23 December) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances leading up to the incident.”
A Southeastern spokesperson said: “Sadly a person was hit by a train late last night between Dover and Faversham. Some trains were diverted last night and early this morning to allow the emergency services to complete their work, but all lines have now re-opened.”
Buses were in operation and tickets were being accepted on Stagecoach last night and early this morning. The first train to run was announced to be the 7.26am Faversham to Dover, followed by the 8.18am Dover to Victoria.
