Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses and information about the incident which happened on November 24 in Barnham Road, Barnham, at around 12.30pm.
It was reported that the 16-year-old victim was approached by a young man who demanded he hand over his coat and bag and made threats of violence, police said.
The suspect also stole the teenager’s hat before walking away in the direction of Saxby Close and shouting at the victim to leave the area. The suspect has been described as a “young white man aged between 16 and 18 years old with medium-length brown and blond hair styled in a centre parting with ‘curtain bangs’”.
He is believed to have been wearing a black Tommy Hilfiger puffa jacket and black Trapstar jogging bottoms.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Officers are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry in an ongoing investigation.
“We encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any relevant information such as CCTV or mobile footage to report it to us online or by calling 101 quoting serial 532 of 24/11.”
